EXPERIENCE
Mochitsuki
MochitsukiMochi Pounding Experience
Mochitsuki is a traditional Japanese ceremony in which steamed
glutinous rice is pounded with a mortar
and wooden mallets to make mochi.
Because mochi stretches easily, it symbolizes long life
and good fortune, and has long been enjoyed on special occasions
and seasonal festivals where people gather to celebrate.
While mochitsuki has become rare in modern cities,
it is still an important New Year tradition in Tawarazawa.
In this experience, you will join local residents in pounding mochi
and enjoy the lively rhythm and sense of togetherness that fill the air.
Freshly made mochi, warm and soft right after it is pounded,
has a taste you cannot find in any store.
We will prepare several locally loved sauces
and toppings—please enjoy your mochi along with
seasonal dishes of your choice.
