ShishimaiLion Dance Performance & Participation

The shishimai, or lion dance, is a traditional Japanese performing art
in which dancers wear a lion-shaped mask called a shishigashira.
It has long been cherished as a symbol of good fortune,
believed to drive away evil spirits and bring health and protection.
The shishimai performed here follows a playful story.
The lion—an embodiment of the mountain deity—comes down
from the mountains, misbehaves a little, takes naps,
and plays with children as it dances energetically. Sometimes,
the lion even approaches the audience to tease them.
When the lion “bites” a person’s head, it is said to eat away misfortune
and offer protection.This custom is considered lucky,
as the word kamitsuku (to bite) echoes kami ga tsuku (a deity arrives).
If you place a small charm on your head,
the lion will gladly come to bite it.In Tawarazawa,
by local children for generations.During this experience,
you can watch the shishimai up close, receive its blessings,
and even try playing the taiko drums
that accompany the performance—an opportunity to truly feel
the spirit of traditional Japanese culture.

獅子舞は、ライオンをかたどった「獅子頭（ししがしら）」をかぶって舞う、
の伝統芸能です。邪気を払い、無病息災を祈る縁起物として長く親しまれてきました。
披露する獅子舞にはストーリーがあります。山から降りてきた獅子＝山の神の化身が
やんちゃをしたり、昼寝をしたり、子どもたちと遊んだりしながら、にぎやかに舞います。
獅子は、時々鑑賞者にも、ちょっかいを出します。人の頭を噛む行為は、
悪いものを食べて守ってくれるという意味があり、「噛みつく」と「神がつく」を
かけた縁起のよい習わしです。頭にお札を乗せると、喜んで噛みに来てくれます。
俵沢では、地元の子どもたちを中心に代々受け継がれてきました。
この体験では、獅子舞を間近で鑑賞し、幸せを祈願するとともに、
実際にお囃子の太鼓を叩いてみることで、日本の伝統文化に触れることができます。
